Do you have rough or textured skin? It could be a sign that your skin is not at its best health, and you should take actions to improve them now! What could be the reasons your skin isn’t feeling as smooth, and how best to address them? Read on to find out.
Why is my skin not smooth anymore?
Several conditions that can cause rough skin: visible pores, deep or pitted scars, lines and wrinkles, or skin dehydration. Whichever condition it may be, they may involve different factors which NEED to be treated with the right solutions.
Visible Pores
Having pores is natural and a health necessity for your skin. The common myth that pores can be ‘opened’ or ‘closed’ by methods of steaming or rubbing ice all over, is not true. They can in fact stretch or appear more visible, causing orange peel-like pitted texture when congested by oil and dirt, or when the collagen in your skin is damaged as a result of sun exposure or ageing.
Improve the appearance of your pores by keeping them clean from impurities by exfoliating, using purifying skincare like clay masks or products with AHA ingredients, or by religiously applying sunscreen to prevent further sun damage. To reverse the stretched pores, treatment like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is excellent to restore collagen and subsequently help improve the appearance of pores on your skin.
PRP is a treatment where patient’s blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells with platelet-rich plasma. It is essentially using the patient’s own blood platelets and plasma to be micro-needled into the skin. This will help stimulate collagen production, increasing the skin elasticity and improve the appearance of pores. It is also a great treatment for rejuvenating the skin, smoothing lines and wrinkles and improving pitted acne scars!
Deep or Pitted Acne Scars
Deep or pitted scars can be frustrating – but how did it come to this stage? Severe inflammatory acne that you once had could have damaged the skin’s underlying tissues. And when your skin needs collagen to repair the scars but is not producing enough of it, you are then left with hollows in your skin. Unfortunately, this type of scar cannot be removed by skincare application.
Pitted acne scars can be treated with collagen-stimulating aesthetic treatments like PRP, or the Scar Eraser – both of which are available at The Retreat Clinic. When collagen-production is escalated, it will help fill in the hollows, increasing skin elasticity that result in better skin texture. Scar Eraser at The Retreat Clinic uses fractionated bi-polar RF technology to encourage significant increase of collagen and elastin for smoother and supple skin.
Lines and Wrinkles
The classic signs of ageing – lines, sagging and wrinkles, could be the cause of why your skin is not feeling as smooth as it used to. As we age, the important elements of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), collagen and elastin in our skin start to decrease, making the skin lose its support and prone to lines and wrinkles.
Aside from good skincare practice, a great aesthetic solution that can effectively smoothen out wrinkles and lines is using facial fillers. Fillers that use Hyaluronic Acid can fill up creases and reduce any wrinkles and lines easily over a quick non-surgical procedure. And the results can last up to 9 months. At The Retreat Clinic, our #SkinRetreat Facesculpting treatment uses a combination of selected fillers and Botox to treat patients with wrinkles and lines, sagging of skin, tired undereye, jawline and nose bridge definition and more.
Dehydrated or Dry Skin
Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different things, though both can lead to textured skin. Dehydrated skin simply means your skin is lacking water, and this could make your skin feel rough and lines more visible. Replenishing the fluid intake will help, but talk to your aesthetic doctor if you need extra help. Meanwhile, dry skin basically means your skin is not regulating enough oil to keep it moisturised, hence special aesthetic help would be needed.
One of the popular treatments at The Retreat Clinic that is excellent for improving skin hydration and moisture is Volite. This FDA-approved filler uses the water-retaining ingredient Hyaluronic Acid to increase production of collagen and elastin for better skin suppleness and elasticity. Volite results in long-lasting hydration and overall skin quality.
