What it is
Emsella uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy, the same family of technology used in muscle-building devices for the body. Applied to the pelvic floor, it triggers thousands of supramaximal contractions in a single session, far more than a person can produce voluntarily. The pelvic floor muscle responds by strengthening and densifying.
What it does well
Stress urinary incontinence, the kind that happens with a sneeze, a cough or a jump. Postpartum pelvic floor recovery. Some forms of urge incontinence. Pelvic floor weakness that follows weight changes or ageing. It is used by both women and men.
What it does not do
Emsella does not treat structural prolapse beyond a certain degree, and it is not a substitute for assessment by a urogynaecology specialist where one is needed. It is also not a weight loss or body contouring treatment, despite occasional marketing in that direction.
Our view
Pelvic floor concerns are common and undertreated, partly because they are uncomfortable to bring up. The treatment itself is undramatic. You sit on a chair, fully clothed, and let the device work for half an hour. We talk about it openly with patients who would benefit, and recommend it where it is the right answer.
Practical notes
A session is about thirty minutes, fully clothed. A course is usually six sessions over three weeks. No downtime, no pain, just a strong tugging sensation during the session.
